CLUB HISTORY

A Home Away from Home for Generations

The Serbian Community Centre of Western Australia was built on the dreams, sweat, and unwavering dedication of volunteers who saw the need for a space where Serbian migrants could stay connected to their roots, culture, and each other.

While the Centre was officially opened in 1997, our story began much earlier. In the 1970s and 80s, as waves of Serbian migrants settled in Australia, the need for a community hub grew. In 1980, the association “Zavičaj” (“Homeland”) was formed to support and unite our growing community. What followed was nothing short of remarkable—ordinary working people coming together to fundraise, plan, and eventually build something extraordinary.

Construction of the Centre began symbolically on Australia Day in 1993, and despite limited resources, it was completed through the sheer determination of volunteers and support from state government grants. In its foundation lies a sealed time capsule—a testament to the vision and goals of those early pioneers for future generations.

Today, the Serbian Community Centre stands as one of Perth’s largest cultural venues. It serves not only the Serbian community but also Afghan, Nepalese, Malaysian, Indian, and other multicultural groups. From folkloric performances to soccer tournaments, weddings to community meetings, our Centre is alive with activity, pride, and purpose.

Our mission remains the same:

•To promote cultural, sporting, and social activities that foster unity, values, and belonging.

•To champion Australia’s multicultural identity and contribute as loyal, active citizens.

We honour our past, serve our present, and build for our future. Whether you’re here to reconnect, celebrate, or get involved—welcome to your home away from home.
